Is it true that if you step on a cold surface a lot without slippers or shoes, then you ache in the future.?

My dad keeps telling me that if I don't wear slippers on cold, hard surfaces that my feet will ache when I get older. I hate wearing slippers but I wanted to know if this was true.

Thank You

Is it true that if you step on a cold surface a lot without slippers or shoes, then you ache in the future.?
Nope, contrary to what many people believe, feet do not need support even on hard surfaces.

From "Survey in China and India of Feet That Have Never Worn Shoes,":

One hundred and eighteen of those interviewed were rickshaw coolies. Because these men spend very long hours each day on cobblestone or other hard roads pulling their passengers at a run it was of particular interest to survey them. If anything, their feet were more perfect than the others. All of them, however, gave a history of much pain and swelling of the foot and ankle during the first few days of work as a rickshaw puller. But after either a rest of two days or a week's more work on their feet, the pain and swelling passed away and never returned again. There is no occupation more strenuous for the feet than trotting a rickshaw on hard pavement for many hours each day yet these men do it without pain or pathology.

On cold surfaces your dad may be thinking of arthritis, but I informed with the arthritis society and they informed me there is no proven correlation between walking barefoot on cold surfaces and developing the disease. It's a very common belief but it's not based on any research.

In my own experience of eleven years of going barefoot *everywhere* (including outdoors, on cold pavement, even in the rare snow we get here), my feet are very strong and healthy, and I get far *less* colds than I used to. I used to be sickly all winter long, coughing and sneezing from early fall until late spring, but these past eleven years I've called in sick once -for two days and not even in winter.
Reply:Any time :) I hope it helps -parents can be very hard to convince even when you do show them books, websites etc... well all people can be hardheaded sometimes but parents who try to do their best especially so :) Report It

Reply:Sounds to me like your father is right. When you run around on cold or hard surfaces without shoes on, your feet develop a toughness to them and for some people that toughness becomes very uncomfortable when they get older.

I am not too fond of slippers either, if you just wear socks around you will be fine!

Hope this helped!
