What are the elastic strap on the back of canvas ballet slippers for?

i just bought a pair of ballet slippers for my end-of-year performance at school. i%26#039;m not much of a dancer, so could anyone tell me what the elastic staps on the ankles of the slippers are for?

What are the elastic strap on the back of canvas ballet slippers for?
~When the ballerina does a really good split, the elastic straps give the stage hands soemthing to use for leverage to break the suction.
Reply:If the elastic is placed in the right place on the slipper, slightly behind the center. It helps prevent the heal of the slipper stay on the foot when you do moves that place most of the weight of your foot to the front of the slipper. Ballet slippers, even if they are not toe shoes should fit the foot like a glove fits the hand. Tight but not uncomfortable. The elastic in combination with the small cord that runs around the top of the slipper help keep the slipper on. After you put the slipper on pull the cord at the front tight to your foot and tie it tight. Now move your foot around on the floor and if the slipper is the right size you can dance comfortably without the slipper feeling like it wants to fall off. I know it may be a hassle to find a dance store but for your first pair of ballet slippers it pays to have an experienced person fit your foot. Different brands come in various sizes and it does differ from your street shoes. Good luck with your dancing and have fun! Best wishes, Jamie.
